Goliath Beetle

My response to a Workshop Challenge on Renderosity.

DeZ provided the excellent model of the Goliath beetle, for which I can claim no credit, having only preformed a very minor change to the pose; the challenge was to texture it using entirely original materials.  All materials were created and the scene rendered in Cinema 4D 8.5 XL.  Those used for the head, thorax and elytra (plus the ground) used original textures created in Paint Shop Pro 8.  All materials including the preceding and the (here invisible) underside were subjected to a variety of modifications in C4D including bimp mapping, displacement mapping, specular and reflection effects in various combinations.  I had originally intended to go for realism.  However, I got carried away playing with displacement mapping in particular, so in the end settled for the real-life colours, but not the true pattern, as this did not look right against the longitudinal striations I had created on the elytra with displacement.  These striae are not however present in the actual insect, unlike many of its cousins.
