Modern Mythology
Although a life-long atheist, I nonetheless recognise the power of Christian (and other religious) iconography and symbolism both in the visual arts and literature, and its obvious cultural influences that (to me) surprisingly survive to 21st century. This was my attempt to produce a collage that combined various images downloaded from the web, from Paint Shop Pro tubes, hand drawn elements and my own digicam photographs, that emphasised the Christian obsession with suffering and redemption, death and resurrection - though here without the personally implausible latter aspect. I tried to give the impression of the oppressive weight of these concepts. The colours were chosen for their sombre tones, and the associations with the red of blood and communion wine, and the livid green of the corruption of the tomb respectively. A personal interpretation with which I know some will not associate themselves and their beliefs, but part of the role of art is to challenge and confront, so I make no apologies for this.
